I love street food and you would not believe how much excitement a good old food truck can evoke in me. A tiny disadvantage I often encounter is the seating problem, particularly when the food trucks don’t provide it and and you live in a place- say Berlin - that does not necessarily have the best weather for outdoor seating for half the year. Markthalle IX solves this exact problem while offering great high quality street food from basically all over the world.
Besides regular grocery markets during the week (Tuesday, Friday, Saturday), the market hall in Kreuzberg is organising some special events - like Easter specials, summer specials or breakfast specials (and Kate can't say no to that).
I also truly believe that Markthalle IX offers a yummy bite for everyone - we are in Berlin after all. Look out for The Tofu Tussis if you want to enjoy a nice vegan burger with tofu. You will also run into food from all over the world, such as Tapiocaria Berlin, offering Brazilian Street Food. Naturally I could not resist a tasty crepe made from Tapioca, a starch extracted from the cassava root.
The most precious finding I ever made at Markthalle IX was Brammibal’s Donuts, a vegan donut shop. They now have several shops all over Berlin, but when I used to be around, they only started out at Markthalle XI. Definitely hit them up if you are ever in town (strawberry coconut was my favourite)!
After a whole bunch of delicious food and beer, you will definitely decide to come back. And before you go, grab a “Wegbier” in Markthalle XI for your way home because YES - in Germany you are actually allowed to drink on the streets.
Have you been to Martkhalle IX in Berlin? If not, would you go? Do you know of any other good places for street food?
Kate recommends: Markthalle IX goes well with a copy of Cinnamon and Gunpowder by Eli Brown. Why? Food and pirates, you guys. Food and pirates.
